Janet Niewald lives in the Virginia mountains where she and her husband, ceramist David Crane, built their home and studios. Niewald exhibits nationally and has had gallery representation in Richmond, VA, Santa Fe, NM, and Kansas City, MO. Her work has been included in National Academy of Design invitationals, exhibitions at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Masur Museum, the Mint Museum, and the Taubman Museum of Art, as well as in many university gallery/museum exhibitions. Recently, she had a one-person show at Bowery Gallery, NYC. Niewald earned her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and her MFA from Indiana University, Bloomington. She taught in the School of Visual Arts at Virginia Tech where she received a number of teaching awards including the Career Achievement Award from the College of Architecture and Urban Studies. She is the recipient of awards such as a Ford Foundation Grant/Residency, and is a member of the Midwest Paint Group.
