Robert Sulkin

Robert Sulkin is a photographer known for intricately constructed images that explore the line between fact and fiction. His conceptual photography explores themes of disorientation and human futility in a technologically driven world.

He is Professor Emeritus of Art at Hollins University, where he taught photography from 1980 to 2019. Sulkin holds a BA in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and both an MA and MFA in Art from the University of Iowa. In 2009, he was awarded a Professional Fellowship from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in recognition of his contributions to the field.

Sulkin’s photography has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions both regionally and nationally. In 2019, a retrospective of his work Robert Sulkin, Photographs, 1973-2019, was held at the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum, Hollins University. His work was also the subject of the traveling exhibition Robert Sulkin, Photographs 1985-1995, sponsored by the Virginia Museum of Fine Art. In 2016, a feature story, “The Experimental Professor” appeared in Black and White Photography Magazine.
