Brian Counihan
Brian Counihan is a Roanoke-based multidisciplinary artist, educator, and community arts organizer whose practice spans painting, printmaking, performance, illustration, and community-engaged art.
Counihan has maintained an active studio practice alongside a decades-long commitment to arts education, cultural exchange, and community engagement. Since 2002, he has been a founding faculty member of Community High School of Arts & Academics in Roanoke, where he teaches humanities and serves as Chair of Fine Arts. He has also taught at Hollins University, Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, and Lynchburg College. In recent years, his creative efforts have focused largely on establishing the Daisy Art Parade, a grassroots annual event launched in response to a Roanoke Arts Commission grant seeking art projects that could bring neighborhoods together following COVID-19. Dubbed “Roanoke’s Happiest Parade,” the event has grown into a year-round community-building and organizing effort.
